It was on this date in 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since 1990, Universal Children's Day also marks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the declaration and the convention on children's rights.

These kids are in a different world While everyone else is engrossed in the folk dances and other festivities at this village festival in Ura valley, these kids are engrossed in a different world altogether. (Ura valley, Bhutan , 2015)

Going to school in the mountains Special admiration is due for the children in the mountains. Many of them have to trek significant distances to go to school.  Children in the cities cannot even imagine the kind of hardships these children have to go through.  Over the last so many years, in my numerous travels in the mountains, what has amazed me is the happiness that radiates from the faces of these children despite the hardships they have to undergo in their day to day life.
